“I’ve tried styling a ma mian qun with a T-shirt or a blouse, because Hanfu is sometimes a bit over the top for everyday life,” says Ku. Over time the ritual became more universal, simpler, and redundant; it could be performed without a 3rd party present or even manumissio minus justa (without fair hearing). This ritual of bestowing attire to recognize a superior was broken during the Mongol Yuan dynasty. It is a form of yichang (i.e. a set of attire composed of upper and lower garment). Hanfu, which translates to “Han clothing,” refers to the traditional attire worn by the Han Chinese people. It also popular for people to use fabrics (such as brocade) to decorate the collars, sleeves and front and their gowns; this clothing decoration customs is known as ‘partial decorations of gowns’ and was influenced by the Sogdians of Central Asia who had entered China since the Northern and Southern dynasties period. The Sogdians were also called Hu (Chinese: 胡) in Chinese. Humao (胡帽) “Barbarian hat”. It has been theorised that the capotain inspired the top hat. Hats with fur earflaps have been known for centuries, especially in the Balkan countries Bulgaria, Serbia, Romania, Croatia, Slovenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, North Macedonia, as well as in Northeastern Italy, in the Julian March, Trieste, and surrounding areas where there has been a large Slavic population for centuries. Ushanka hats are made from sheepskin (tsigeyka or mouton), karakul, rabbit, muskrat, mink and many other furs. They are also traditionally worn in the Baltic region including Sweden, Finland, Norway and the whole eastern European region.
